Alberta Foster and Kinship Association

Unseen.
Unacknowledged.
Unappreciated.
Until now.

Alberta’s foster and kinship caregivers are the invisible backbone of our community—offering love, stability, and hope to children in their most vulnerable moments.

But too often, their sacrifices go unnoticed.

It’s time to change that.

Join us in recognizing these unsung heroes. Nominate Alberta’s foster and kinship caregivers for the ultimate ‘getaway’ prize—because they deserve to be seen, celebrated, and appreciated.

“It is hard; it is usually thankless.
It is heartbreaking. It is encouraging.
It is a LOT.

It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s the BEST thing I’ve ever done.”
– Kinship Caregiver

More than 7,000 children in Alberta are in care.

It’s a staggering number—a number that reveals just how essential our foster and kinship caregivers truly are.

They navigate a world of uncertainty, where their roles are often overlooked, and their sacrifices go unacknowledged.

Foster and kinship caregiving is not just about providing a home. It’s about holding together the fragile pieces of a child’s life. Often at the cost of their own well-being.

But despite it all, they stay. They endure the sleepless nights, the tears, the frustration, and the heartbreak because they know that without them, these children might have no one.

It’s a calling. One that demands every ounce of their strength, patience, and love.

These are the unseen heroes—the ones who step in when others step away. Who fight for children that others have forgotten.

They do it because they believe every child deserves a chance. A safe space and a loving, stable home while waiting for their world to be righted. For their families to be made whole again.

Their sacrifice is immense, their love unyielding. And yet, too often, their efforts go unnoticed. They give everything.

They deserve to be seen, respected, and supported in their incredible work.

About AFKA

We wish we didn’t have to exist.

In a perfect world, every child in Alberta would grow up surrounded by unwavering love, stability, and support.

Every family would have the resources and community backing needed to nurture and guide their children through life’s challenges

Every day, over 6,000 licensed foster and kinship caregivers across Alberta open their hearts and homes to children in need, providing safe havens during times of uncertainty and upheaval.

These caregivers face immense challenges—navigating complex systems, addressing deep-seated traumas, and often sacrificing their own well-being to ensure the children under their care have a chance at a better future.

This is where the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association (AFKA) steps in.

Born out of necessity, AFKA is dedicated to supporting, advocating for, and empowering these selfless caregivers.

We provide essential resources, training, and a supportive community to help them navigate their crucial roles effectively and compassionately.

While we long for a world where organizations like ours aren’t needed, we remain committed and steadfast in our mission—to stand beside Alberta’s foster and kinship caregivers, ensuring they are seen, heard, and celebrated for the extraordinary difference they make in children’s lives every single day
